FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS Urologic Oncology Fellowship ProgramPreambleThe Division of Urology at The University of Western Ontario has, over the years, offered post-residency fellowship training in Uro-oncology, both in basic research and clinical training. The programme has trained fellows, both in research and clinical uro-oncology, from Canadian centers and from many countries who have gone on to be prominent uro-oncologists and opinion leaders in their respective communities and countries. The fellowship programme is now accredited with The Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), an American Urological Association affiliate society. Our two-year fellowship programme is organized as an integrated multi-disciplinary fellowship, involving urology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, experimental oncology and with input from faculty members from related diagnostic and therapeutic departments. Mission To produce Uro-oncologists, who are well-equipped to play a prominent leadership role in the field of Uro-Oncology nationally and internationally. He/she will be able to assume responsibilities of academia in uro-oncology and/or conduct a clinical practice with major emphasis in Uro-Oncology. The candidate will have an excellent background in basic and/or clinical research to complement his/her career development. Educational Objectives- To enhance the clinical experience in various treatment options of Urologic Oncology, including assessment and consultation of new patients, follow-up of patients in the ambulatory care setting and operative experience (including radical urologic oncologic surgery and reconstruction).
- To become competent in the surgical management of all complex tertiary & quaternary Uro-oncology referral cases.
- To enhance clinical experience in other ancillary diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines
- To gain experience in clinical trials involving Uro-Oncology patients, in all urologic organ sites, including experimental therapeutic trials.
- To gain experience by participating in the development of new and investigational and emerging treatment modalities.
- To gain experience by participating in the research activities relating to all areas listed above as well as to initiate and conduct other Uro-Oncologic research projects that are compatible with and complementary to all current ongoing clinical programs.
- To gain experience in translational research by participating in and be a liaison with clinical applications for the on-going basic research studies (for example, new markers for prostate cancer) and conducting studies on clinical correlation.
- To produce several high quality peer-reviewed publications from the fellowship period based on the candidate's research work
- To enrich the academic experience by participating in teaching of junior trainees and students, by participating in academic rounds and discussions, by attendance and active participation in international, national and regional meetings, by active involvement in writing peer-reviewed grants and in preparation of manuscripts for publications
Proposed Rotations This is a two-year programme, with one clinical year and one research year. The clinical year will consist of the following rotations: - 2 months of Medical Oncology
- 1 month of Radiation Oncology
- 1 month of Gynecologic Oncology
- 8 months on Urologic Oncology
The Fellow, while on Clinical Rotations, will take an active role in clinical trials involving hormone therapy, chemotherapy and alternative therapies, in addition to surgically and radiation-related therapies and epidemiologic studies. In the Research year, the Fellow will receive training in engaged in clinical trials(trials. He/she will be the primary investigator in whatever aspects of prostate cancer research he/she prefers. The Fellow can participate in on-going laboratory studies in molecular genetics, experimental therapeutics (including gene therapy), tumour marker studies and image-guided innovative therapies and various other translational research projects. |
